Upgrade To Wordpress 2.7 – Notice Any Speed Issues?

Not only do I personally run a few blogs, but I also contribute to and maintain the Just Search blogs.  So when a new version of Wordpress comes out I have to organise updating between 10 and 15 blogs.  What normally happens when a new version is released is that I read the release notes to see if there are any security issues that have been fixed.  If there is then I always update as soon as I can, otherwise I will usually leave it for a week and watch the blogosphere for any news of problems.

When major versions are released you tend to see a few problems being spotted and fixed and a minor version being released not long afterwards.  Wordpress 2.7 appears to be no different as I have read a few comments here and there about the system being very slow. This speed issue appears to be in both the admin section and the front end of the site.

When I read this I thought I would test things and so I got hold of an online test server and installed Wordpress 2.7 on it in order to see if it was any slower than the previous version. I didn’t notice any problems on this test server at all. I can say for certain that after upgrading a few blogs that there doesn’t seem to be much of a speed issue. The admin section is slightly slower, but I’m guessing this is because there is a lot of stuff going on. The sliding menus and movable screen sections is enough to slow any page down. There is definately no slowdown on the front end of the new version.

So this is an open question. Does anyone see any speed decrease in the new version of Wordpress? We would love to heard from you and any thoughts you have on the subject.

  1. My site came to a crawl with 2.7 installed. Example: Login to admin page was 1 minute 38 seconds with 2.7. I just reverted to 2.6.x and now I’m back to my old speed of taking 2-3 seconds to login to the admin page. Version 2.7 was equally sluggish throughout. It was practically unusable. The downgrade was very easy to perform. Looks like I’ll be waiting for a 2.7.1 before I try again to upgrade.

  2. I agree completely. I installed v2.7 and my site is whoppingly slower, both at the front end and on the admin side. I’m just about to downgrade to 2.6.

  3. I’ve got it running on two sites, and both are painfully slow at times. It is impacting the other services running on the server, and I have been unable to track the bottleneck. Doesn’t seem to be database related, as I see no slow queries. I might have to go back to 2.6.x if something doesn’t change.

  4. I spent over a week trying to figure out what was going on. I had 2.7.1 and both the admin panel and the public site were horribly slow. I finally downgraded to 2.6.5 and it’s perfectly fine now. Hopefully 2.8 will be OK. I miss moderating comments using the WP app for iPhone!
